Women in Jazz

Thursday, April 147:00—8:00 PMZoom

Join jazz lecturer and performer, Galen Abdur-Razzaq, for an exciting evening learning about the experiences of women in jazz history! Women have been involved in jazz since the early 1920s, not just as vocalists, but as instrumentalists, composers and arrangers. Galen highlights many women in jazz history, like Bessie Smith, Valaida Snow, Mildred Bailey, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughn. He teaches about their personal lives along with their ability to read music, perform, and survive in a time when jazz was considered “a man’s world.”

In addition to learning about these women, you will also get to hear Galen perform jazz solos on his flute and you will get to ask him questions during a Q&A session.
